I used a stain- and water-resistant fabric remnant for the outer lining, a colorful heavy cotton/linen for the inner lining, white cotton elastic for the holder loops, and surrounded the whole thing with a coordinated binding for an added pop of color. Unlike the original design, I also made an ample carrying pouch which they can use to add extra utensil/silverwear bits that don't have a designated place, just so they can keep everything together. After making it, I would make some changes to the design for next time, but all in all not too bad of a project.
Notes for next time:
- The original had pieces of cardboard sandwiched between the layers, but I didn't think that was needed and used cotton batting instead, which worked fine and frankly gives it a bit more versatility
- The original has Velcro so that is what I used, but frankly I think loops and buttons would be better-- again more flexibility and durability
- The silverwear holder part to the right might work better rolled up instead of folded over and velcroed.
- Another design feature that might work well would be to have a long loop of elastic or fabric ties that goes around the entire kit to seal it up, instead of using the Velcro
